What is Botox, what is it made from?
Botox is one brand of Botulinum toxin type A a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. Other brands available are Dysport, Azzalure, Xeomin, Bocouture and Neurobloc (a type B toxin). It is a non-surgical, treatment that can temporarily reduce lines caused by overexpresion of certain muscles such as frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines and crows feet. It is used in people between the ages of 18 to 65. During the treatment, very small amounts of Botulim Toxins are administered using a very tiny needle directly into the muscles that cause the expression lines. Depending upon the number of areas that need treating and the experience of the Botulim Toxin practitioner, treatments take about 10 – 20 minutes and are usually painless. No recovery time is needed and you should begin to see an improvement within 3-4 days and the results usually last up to 3-4 months.
How does Botox work?
Frown lines between your brows and crows feet form over time as the result of muscle activity and skin ageing. As skin ages it loses collagen and elasticity so over time lines caused my muscle contraction leave visible wrinkles in the skin. Botulinum Toxin works by stopping nerves releasing a chemical called acetylcholine which muscles need to contract. When a muscle that causes skin creasing is weakened the skin is able to recover and the appearance of wrinkles or lines is softened or sometimes diminished
When will I see results from my Botox treatment?
Within two to seven days you will notice a weakening of the muscles, however the lines continue to improve for four to six weeks as skin turnover is approximately 28 days. The results from Botulinum Toxin last for up to 4 months and so regular visits to have the treatment are required to maintain a wrinkle free look. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women rated the improvement in their appearance as moderate to better one month after treatment.
What side effects could I experience with Botox?
The most common side effects after botox injections are bruising or temporary swelling at the injection site. Less common side effects are temporary drooping of the eyelid, drooping of eyebrows, blurred vision, double vision, dry eyes, headaches and flu like symptoms. The Lip Doctor does not use insulin syringes to inject, only ultra fine 33 gauge needles so the procedure is virtually painless. More nervous people can have anaesthetic cream to numb the skin if they wish.
Will my facial expressions look natural after treatment?
Done properly, treatment with Botox should look natural. There are some variables but these can be addressed at the check up appointment we do after 2 weeks. Botox can also be used to lift up eyebrows, mouth corners, improve appearance of gummy smiles and correct some facial asymmetries.
How long has Botox been in use?
As long ago as 1978, Botox was used as a treatment for patients with eye squints by weakening the overactive eye muscle. Since then it has been used in a variety of therapeutic areas such as blepharospasm, headaches, spasmodic neck, writer’s cramp, tics, multiple sclerosis, facial spasms, Parkinson’s Disease, cerebral palsy, overactive bladder and vaginismus to name but a few. Compared to the medical uses the doses for cosmetic applications are very low so safety is assured.
